Tips for Managing Windows Defender Settings

Every Windows laptop and desktop is equipped with Windows Defender which is the built-in antivirus software launched by Microsoft. Now, the Windows Defender is always turned on in your computer as it aims to defend the computer against security threats.

However, there are also certain situations where Windows Defender affects the working of the computer which is why many users wish to know how to turn off Windows Defender. You can either temporarily disable the Defender or permanently turn it off. This article will mention the tips and instructions that you need to remember to effectively manage Windows Defender.

What is the method to turn off Windows Defender temporarily?

There is a simple procedure which allows you to turn off the Defender; however, you need to remember that after every reboot the Defender will turn itself on.

  1. Hit the Start button on your computer and enter “Windows Security” in the search bar.

  2. After accessing it, you need to look for the “Virus & threat protection” section where you are required to press ‘Manage Settings’.

  3. You will be able to see the option which says ‘Real-time protection’ Turn the toggle for the same to off to turn off windows defender.

What is the process for permanently turning off Windows Defender?

Since the above method will only work temporarily as the Defender enabled itself after the computer reboots, there is another method that can be used to turn it off permanently.

This method requires you to have access to the Group Policy Editor which is not available on the Windows Home versions. Apart from this, the method only works on the Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows 10 and 11 making it impossible for people to turn off the Defender permanently on their home computers. You can try and download a different antivirus program as this new program will form Windows Defender to take the back seat on the computer.
